9 Great IRS Tools for Taxpayers
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) doesn’t exactly evoke the warm fuzzies. But while some might view it as some sort of taxation boogeyman, the agency does try to be helpful — and amongst its most valuable offerings are a number of IRS tools for taxpayers.
Specifically, IRS.gov is a one-stop shop for tax novices and experts alike, offering how-to guides, FAQs, calculators, estimators and downloadable files.
The following are some of the most useful tools you can find on the IRS’s website.
The Most Useful IRS Tools for Taxpayers
Remember: This is just a short list of the IRS’s most useful tools. If you’re looking for something that isn’t here, you still might find it on IRS.gov’s tools page.
- IRS Forms, Instructions and Publications: This is a comprehensive, searchable list of helpful tax documents — everything from forms, such as 1040s and W-4s, to lists of taxpayer rights (listed in roughly 20 languages, in fact).
- Where’s My Refund?: Check the status of your income tax refund for multiple years. You’ll typically want to wait at least 36 hours after e-filing to use this tool (longer if you mail your return). The IRS says it should take at least three weeks after your information appears before you’ll receive your refund.
- Business Tax Calendar: Track important business tax dates and deadlines for every month. You can see all events or filter them for various event types. You can visit this page on your desktop or mobile device.
- Employer ID Number: Apply online for your Employer Identification Number (EIN).
- Tax Withholding Estimator: Not sure how much federal income tax your employer should withhold from your paycheck? This IRS tool helps you make an accurate estimate.
- Tax-Exempt Organization Search: You can use the Tax-Exempt Organization Search tool to learn more about an organization’s tax-exempt status — that way you’ll know whether it’s eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.
- Earned Income Tax Credit Assistant: Find out if you’re eligible and estimate the amount of your Earned Income Tax Credit.
- Sales Tax Deduction Calculator: Use this IRS tool to determine the amount of optional state and local sales tax you can claim on Schedule A of Form 1040.
- Steps for Making Filing Easier in 2023: This isn’t exactly a tool, but instead a set of steps that will make your 2023 filing easier — including information that could affect your 2022 tax refund.
